You're an idiot.

One of the many things demanded was the ability for competitors to implement their own Airplay. So effective mandate of direct access to the network stack.

Is the stupid EU taking bribes from "Big Spyware" now?
So they would have to agree to normalize AirPlay as the protocol for screen casting?

That would actually be pretty cool NGL, since y'know, I've heard a lot of talk about Wireless display protocols for over a decade now and there has been ZERO PROGRESS.

Also "direct access?" My brother in christ, both Chromecast and AirPlay essentially fast encode the framebuffer from the user space on AV1 or HEVC and those are also user-level chips.

The EU has faults, bribability isn't one of them. You've not just got one commissioner to schmooze, there's 27 member states, ask Uber, Google, Microsoft & Apple about how well that goes.

In spite of rising tensions and tough talk, the European Commission seems unfazed and is continuing to follow its more stringent laws, like the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
I can't see 'following the law' going down well with the current administration.

I mean, they clearly hold US law in utter contempt so I hate to think how they see European law. Especially what they'll see as law from a federal superstate that was apparently created just to screw over the USA.

The Trump administration has to be careful here. If it goes too much off the rails that the EU considers the USA rouge, then they will annex the European arm of these companies in the interest of EU security. Who is going to want to rely on services based inside an unreliable state?
More orange than rouge these days

Im probably a minority, but I would love to see both apple and google (or android OS in googles case) quit selling phones in the EU. Watch the mass panic when there are literally no phones available on the market. (for those countering samsung, they all run android...).

Yes theres some third party ones out there but most are self install, and half are android based still. And no one sells hardware with them pre-installed.
We can always get closer to China and use Huawei, with the current state of the US, closer relations with China looks like a safe bet

We're tariffing and taxing and export-banning shit from China left and right - they hate us too.

The only countries America's gonna be on friendly terms with at this rate are Russia and North Korea.

I'm all for the EU to not budge to US political leverage. That said, the designation of market minority US based players, ex Apple, as gatekeepers, but market majority EU based players, such as Spotify, not as gatekeepers, does tend to undercut their moral authority. EU should definitely hold their line, as long as they can be legally consistent regardless of the country of origin of these 'gatekeepers'.

And considering most US companies has been hoovering up all your data for decades, repackaged it and resold it and probably shared it with any three letter agencies that asked nicely, what is really the big difference between them and Huawei these days? You mean i can buy a phone without Google services? That is a feature, not a bug.

You know that Android is based on Linux, right? And you know that Linux was created and is still being maintained by a guy from the EU? Linus Torvalds was born and lives in Finland, one of EU’s member states.

Also, ARM is from Europe. And all phones, Apple and Android, use ARM of one flavour or another.

I don't think device makers pay for the Android OS, which is open sourced, just the Google Play Services. Google wouldn't have any real control over who makes or sells Android OS phones in Europe if they opt to not use Play Services.

Trump will just annex the EU right after he is done with Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Panama, Half of Ukraine (sharing with his best friend Putin).

Trump cannot negotiate with EU on this or any other matter, because at this point nobody outside of Russia trusts Trump to abide by even his own agreements. Either he'll do it or he won't, there's no point trying to make a deal.
I’d agree with that. Most people I speak here in the Netherlands don’t believe that a promise made today (by Trump) has any value tomorrow.

I have no doubt our politicians will generate empty platitudes and compliments by the dozens as that is what Trump seems to crave, but I doubt any real consessions will be made as Trump will not keep to his part anyway.

Ah, right. Acorn RISC Machine. There’s a story connected with that. At first Acorn Computers wanted to use Intel’s 286 but Intel ignored their queries. So they decided “eff it, we’ll design our own cpu”. And they did.
So maybe US should stop doing business with Europe and it will spark another innovation…

Particularly with Google, there's loads of different issues of potential abuse of dominant market position(s).

Thinking just of Android and iOS though, it strikes me that it'll always tend towards at least a legal monopoly, if not an actual monopoly/duopoly. When even Microsoft couldn't break the phone OS duopoly because of the critical mass effect of the existing app ecosystems in place, you know that the incumbents are going to be effectively impossible to dislodge.

Maybe at some point there'll be true interoperability for apps, where a developer can release across multiple OS's with zero extra effort. Then there would at least be the possibility of new phone OS competitors, but I'm not holding my breath. Not least because Apple and Google have little interest in achieving that, and trying to legislate to force it may be doomed to fail.

This would be great. It would break the Apple/Google duopoly and cause there to be a third viable mobile OS. Perhaps one of those mobile Linux distros with the user's privacy and security being uppermost in the design, rather than rent seeking and surveillance.

One can but dream...

I'd actually be inclined to support this experiment. How long do you figure someone would need to create a replacement OS to fill this massive market gap and reap the profits in such a "gold rush" scenario? The departure of monopolistic giants from a $82bn/year market is quite the big incentive, and the bloc might end up with a "no frills" smartphone that is not just compliant with privacy and market regulations, but possibly more customizable/user-friendly as well.

This being said, I'm not even sure that Google would be in the position to take Android with them if they were to leave the market. It would mean they'd have to be able to dictate OHA partners where they can sell their own products, and I'm pretty sure that's not the case.

Zuckerberg, in his earlier, more idealistic days, was heavily influenced by the game Alpha Centauri, using quotes from it prominently. (It's a great older game, probably the best CIV game ever). He used quotes from in-game character Pravin Lal, the humanist leader of the UN Faction. As time has gone by, and he's become a billionaire, Zuckerberg has migrated to the words and deeds of Morgan, an unfettered Capitalist leader.

How the mighty have fallen.

When will the EU create its own tech industry that it can suck dry? Oh, right, never - takes too much work.
Sorry, did you mean its own tech industry to suck it dry, like how Tesla is worth 20x its actual value because tech companies Hoover up all the capital despite not actually delivering on promises of growth? I'm sure they're kicking themselves that they don't have such great investments as X and DogeCoin.

Forget the rivalry and taxing, the way things are going here in the USA now, there is going to be one massive exodus of brains soon. From climate scientists to mRNA scientists, and everything in-between being abandoned here, the EU, Britain, Canada and so on should be offering positions and salaries as fast as they can.

Linus moved to the USA 1997, even if he's originally from Finland.
